My Whan family roots in Australia come via Mathew Whan who migrated to Australia from Scotland in 1886, many of the Scotish "Crofters" were forced to emigrate during the Potato Famine in the 1850's when the landowners evicted and destroyed the homes of tenants, around 1886 the Crofters' Holdings (Scotland) Act was a result of rent strikes by crofters disputing access to grazing lands
